The exterior album sleeve looks a lot like The Beatles “White Album” cover. However, “Great White Wonder” is another type of musical animal. A rare double LP album in a plain white sleeve with no markings but a title stamped to the upper right hand album cover, is one of the most famous bootlegs of all time. This is the first bootleg ever to be produced in the rock-and-roll era. “Great White Wonder” was originally released in the United States in July 1969. Tracks came from Dylan’s and The Band‘s legendary Basement Tapes sessions, recorded in the cellar of The Band’s upstate New York home, while others were supposedly taped in Minneapolis on December 22, 1961. The recording was never approved by Dylan or his record company. It’s easy to overlook this plain looking album while digging through record bins, but if you find it, you own a rare gem.
